This book isn’t so much about investing as it is creating the right mindset to invest. I really appreciate Susan Calhoun’s approach that there isn’t any excuses for not investing. I love the get off your butt and get busy attitude in putting money together. With Craigslist and EBay, with spare change from the sofa, to skipping on the high dollar coffee, do whatever it takes to get that money in the jar. Just do it! I betcha Dave Ramsey would smile if he read this book.
It is incredible how much information is in this book. Not only does Calhoun lay out the different methods but she explains them in great detail on how they work. This book is a great primer for understanding all the basic vehicles and what is best suited for you. I liked the way she covered ETF’s and offering advice on where you should put your money no matter where you are on the path of investing. A great book and a must read for anyone who feels they have no money, this will open their eyes. Invest, no matter what it takes, love it!

This book provides a good discussion on the different investment options for you to explore that will help you achieve a better financial result. What I like about this book is that it goes into detail on how investment options (e.g. money market accounts, stocks, and bonds, etc.) work; it explains how to calculate the best returns on your money, giving sample
scenarios from which you could have a better understanding of how each option work. I also like the additional resources listed for a particular investment option.
Overall, the book is helpful if you want to learn good investing skills that you might need to build a great wealth. It provides a good list of investment ideas that provides a solid return without requiring a huge amount of up-front cash.

A Beginners Guide to Making a Million: 16 Golden Money Secrets to Becoming a Millionaire is the second book from hedge fund manager and entrepreneur Cheung after Sun Tzu the Art of Making Money: Strategies for getting
through a tough economy. In it he offers practical advice on achieving that dream through revealing what he sees as the sixteen `secrets’ or golden rules of making money through investing.
What can sound to many people like a complicated and dull subject is, thankfully, brought to life by Cheung in easy to understand language. Rather than give us dry economic principles `straight’, the book uses simple, everyday life stories and imagery to explain the basics. If you don’t believe that’s possible, I challenge you to read the first chapter and not know what Compound Interest is by the end of it. I had no idea, but a few minutes with this book was all it took to make me understand.
The use of `real life’ stories and analogies to explain his subject means Cheung can talk about investing without drowning readers in technical jargon. This approach is refreshing. When technical terms are used, great care is taken to make sure they are explained simply and properly.
This is all part of the Cheung’s key aim of writing a book about investing that’s accessible to someone who’s a complete beginner without a detailed knowledge of economics or mathematics. Also, unlike other books I’ve come across on this subject, A Beginner’s Guide to Making a Million is short – only 65 pages. Just enough to read through in one sitting.
Throughout the book, investing principles are explained via the common analogy of gardening. So the development of one’s investments is explained in terms of growing an acorn seed into an oak tree. Or the temptation to spend early savings, rather than invest further, is explained as `garden critters’ eating young shoots.
The final chapter of the book deals how to keep hold of your money and how to enjoy it responsibly. This is a welcome change from the many other books that may deal with the nuts and bolts of investing, but fail to think about the real life reasons why people want to invest their money in the first place.
This is a great book for anyone who wants to get into investing but knows nothing about it, and who doesn’t want to spend years of their life learning before they have a go.

It is a fair statement to say that I am not well versed with the world of finances, and this book has been written specifically for people like me. The tone is light and familiar and each lesson is explained clearly, so you don’t feel left behind in a sea of unrecognizable symbols and technical terms. With everyone facing financial strains at the moment, A Beginners Guide to Making a Million couldn’t come at a better time.
Cheung addresses a key problem that many people face when it comes to investing. Why invest when all you can spare is $10? He addresses this head-on, with real examples and shows that even the tiniest amount of money can become a huge investment if treated in the right way. Similarly, when it comes to retirement funds, Cheung really makes you realize just how important it is to start saving early.
Overall this book sends a clear message about the value of money and the importance of making it work for you. Whether you have absolutely nothing and want to educate yourself about investing, or have a nice nest egg but don’t know what to do with it, A Beginners Guide to Making a Million will show you the way in an interesting and understandable fashion.

Having read Michael Cheung’s other book: Sun Tzu The Art of Making Money: Strategies for Getting Through a Tough Economy I had an idea of what to expect in terms of style and readability.
Cheung writes in an easy style, making what could be a headache of a subject accessible, in plain English. Complex ideas are expressed in easy, and visual, terms – lending extra depth of understanding.
Again, same as with his other book, Cheung has used imagery that resonates with every day life. I love the notion of starting with a “seed” and letting it grow – a proper “money tree”.
I bought this from Amazon UK – This book is universally good, but applies in particular to the American market.
